Windows 8 Media Center

 Tijdens de introductieperiode van Windows 8 is het Windows Media Center gratis te krijgen als je Windows 8 (Pro) hebt geïnstalleerd op je PC. Het gaat via de link http://windows.microsoft.com/nl-NL/windows-8/feature-packs en werkt via een productcode die je per e-mail krijgt toegestuurd. Er zitten allerlei extra's in die ik persoonlijk niet nodig heb, maar het afspelen van DVD's is wel handig, want dat werkt niet via de Media Player van Windows 8 (wel via andere apps, zoals de VLC media player). Ik heb de functie net geïnstalleerd en het werkt!

 Hierboven is te zien dat het Media Center is geactiveerd, maar als je DVD film via Windows Media Player kiest, werkt het niet!

 Met de optie DVD film afspelen via Windows Media Center werkt het wel, zoals is te zien aan de still uit Backdraft:

 Nu nog even de DVD branden functie installeren en Windows 8 is weer bijna helemaal naar mijn zin.

Tuinman Fievet

Vandaag vroeg op omdat tuinman Fievet (uit Bavel) de prunus kwam snoeien en de heg kwam scheren. Het resultaat is hier te zien:

Ziet er weer strak uit! Het afvoeren van het (vele) afval ging ook probleemloos. In 2,5 uur was hij klaar!

Nieuw bankstel

In het kader van de steun van de Europese economie hebben we maar besloten na 19 jaar een nieuw bankstel aan te schaffen. Bij de firma Beter Meubel, net op/over de grens met België in Baarle Nassau/Hertog. Vandaag was de aflevering en dat had nog wat voeten in aarde, want met name de 3-zitsbank bleek lastig naar binnen te krijgen. Door de hoge rugleuning (104 cm hoog) moest er zowel bij de voordeur als bij de deur van de gang naar de kamer gepuzzeld worden. Maar het is gelukt zonder iets te beschadigen!

Omdat de man die het oude bankstel zou overnemen, het op het laatste moment liet afweten, stond het oude bankstel nog in de kamer. We hebben de oude 3-zitsbank wat opzij gezet en de 2-zitsbank op zijn oude plek laten staan tot de Kringloop het oude bankstel a.s. donderdag komt ophalen. Daarom staan de fauteuils even aan de andere kant. Vanavond nog een klusje: alles behandelen met "Leather Protector".

Die fauteuils gaan dus naar de plek waar de fotograaf staat achter de oude 2-zitsbank.

Een gadget voor een gadget

De iPad is een mooi ding, maar hij heeft een beperkte capaciteit (32 Gb in mijn geval) en je kunt er geen externe geheugens zoals USB-sticks of SD kaarten in stoppen. Maar met een "Seagate Satellite Wireless Storage" heb je ineens 500 Gb extra geheugen ter beschikking. Het handige is dat deze externe harde schijf een eigen WiFi omgeving creëert waardoor je b.v. films kunt streamen naar je iPad. Hij heeft een USB-3 aansluiting waarmee je hem op je PC of Mac kunt aansluiten om nieuwe films, muziek of wat dan ook op die harde schijf te zetten. Hij ziet er zo uit:

Hij is ietsje groter dan een 2,5" externe harde schijf en heeft een oplader voor het lichtnet en een adapter voor de auto aansteker om hem onderweg op te laden. De batterij zou 7 uur kunnen werken zonder op te laden (nog niet uitgeprobeerd). Ik heb maar een wachtwoord op de Wifi gezet, anders zit de buurvrouw straks mijn filmpjes te bekijken! ;-) Hij is ook handig voor zakenlieden die er al hun presentaties op kunnen zetten. Nu hoef ik geen muziek meer van de iPad te halen om plaats te maken voor de Homeland serie! Hij was een tijdje geleden in de aanbieding bij Staples (Office Centre), maar is ook bijv. bij MyCom te koop.

Windows 8 eerste ervaringen

Je kunt goed merken dat de Startpagina van Windows 8 is gemaakt voor touchscreens (aanraakschermen) zoals die op een tablet of een smartphone zitten. De besturing met toetsenbord en muis verloopt toch net iets onhandiger dan ik had verwacht, omdat er kennelijk in de ontwerpfilosofie van Microsoft (vrijwel) geen knoppen zichtbaar in beeld mogen zijn als een app geopend is. Dat zou maar afleiden van de inhoud. Maar dat handige knopje rechtsboven met dat kruisje om een programma te sluiten als je klaar bent, mis ik toch wel. Nu moet je eerst de muis naar de rechterbovenhoek bewegen, dan pas komt de balk met "zoeken, delen, start, apparaten en instellingen" naar voren en dan kun je weer terug naar de startpagina, via die knop start. Ik heb inmiddels ontdekt dat je via de Windows toets op het toetsenbord ook heel snel terug bent op de startpagina. Dat is die toets links van de linker Alt toets met dat Windows logo erop. Ik heb even van een Amerikaans blog een lijst met allerlei combinaties van toetsen "geleend", en die plak ik hier maar even in:

Overgestapt op Windows 8

Op de nieuwste laptop (van juni 2012) heb ik vandaag Windows 8 geïnstalleerd. Dankzij het "upgrade offer" voor nieuwe PC's (aangeschaft tussen 2 juni 2012 en 31 januari 2013) kostte die upgrade maar € 14,99. Nadeel voor sommigen zal zijn dat je alleen met creditcard of Paypal kunt betalen. Gisteren eerst maar even een backup gemaakt van alle bestanden, want je weet maar nooit of er iets fout gaat. Zo rond 8.15 uur begonnen met de installatie, en via de upgrade assistent gaat dat probleemloos. Het gaat bij dat upgrade offer om de versie Windows 8 Pro, die heeft wat extra grapjes, waaronder Bitlocker, waarmee je alle gegevens op de harde schijf kunt versleutelen en ook een extern Bureaublad om de pc op afstand te kunnen bedienen.
Het geheel nam toch meer dan een uur in beslag, maar nu staat het nieuwe startscherm in volle glorie in beeld. Ik heb de eerste app van de voorgeïnstalleerde apps al verwijderd: de app sport! Het zal mij worst wezen of de Chicago Bears vanavond tegen iemand anders gaat spelen en wat de uitslag van allerlei andere wedstrijden is. Dus toedeledokie voor die app., maar nu nog even een andere app daarvoor in de plaats zetten, want het lijkt nu net een gebit met een ontbrekende tand. Wat me ook niet zo bevalt, zijn b.v. alle foto's die in de tegel "foto's" langskomen, of alle Facebookvrienden, e-mail contacten etc. in de tegel "personen". Even kijken hoe ik dat weer kan afzetten, want dat is erg onrustig. Wat wel handig is, is de aankondiging van nieuwe mailtjes in de tegel "e-mail". Ik mis wel een klokje in beeld, dat is nu juist wel handig. Die zal ik maar op de plek van de sport-tegel zetten. Ik zal even een schermafbeelding maken (met de Windows toets + PrintScreen) en die invoegen:

Je ziet dus in de agenda wel dat het 29 oktober is, maar er staat geen tijd bij! Rechts staan wat oude toepassingen, die je wel meteen vanaf dit punt kunt starten, en als je terug wilt naar het oude bureaublad, neem je de tegel linksonder. Je ziet ook het gat in de tegels waar de sport tegel is weggegooid.

Ik ga maar eens wat experimenteren met de instellingen!
